Beijing, 1988. On the cusp of middle age, Chen Handong (Hu Jun) has known little but success all his life. As the eldest son of a senior government bureaucrat, he heads a fast-growing trading company and plays as hard as he works. Few know that Handong's tastes run more to boys than girls. Chen develops a relationship with a young boy named Lan Yu (Ye Liu) that goes farther than he ever wanted it to.
The screening in London on 19th March will be followed by a hybrid Q&A session, featuring Dir. Stanley KWAN (online) and producer Yong Ning ZHANG (in-person), moderated in-person by Yi WANG,Festival Director of Queer East Festival.

Stanley Kwan, born in Hong Kong, graduated from the School of Communication at Baptist University. Since directing his first independent film "Women" in 1985, most of Kwan's films have focused on women as their subject matter, with his portrayals of women's emotions being very nuanced and rich. His representative works include "Women" (1985), "Love in a Fallen City" (1986), "Rouge" (1987), "Queen of Temple Street" (1990), "Red Rose White Rose" (1994), "Center Stage" (1992), "Hold You Tight" (1998), "Millennium Mambo" (2000), "Blue Gate Crossing" (2001), and "Everlasting Regret" (2005). Kwan won the Best Director and Best Film awards at the 8th Hong Kong Film Awards for "Rouge" (1987), and the Best Director award at the 38th Golden Horse Awards for "Blue Gate Crossing" (2001). His latest work can be seen in "Eight Women, One Stage Play" (2018).

Although I’m gay, I’m not particularly eager to deal with ‘gay issues’ in the films I make. This film came about entirely by chance. Zhang Yongning (who plays Daning in the film) found the original, anonymously written novel on the internet and asked me if I would like to direct a film adaptation. I read it and found the passions in the central relationship interesting and so I agreed to make the film. In my last film The Island Tales, I made simple things too complicated. And so this time I’ve tried to make complicated things less complicated, or simple things even simpler.
